HOME WEATHER - TIDES - SEA TEMPS | FORUMS

Welcome to lowcountryfishing.net!  The ocean, rivers and marshes have always defined life in the Low Country.  The abundance of water and low-lying terrain makes the 200-mile-long region between Charleston, South Carolina and St. Marys, Georgia a sport fisherman’s paradise!

Over the next several weeks our site will grow.  We are designing it to assist you in planning your next Fishing Adventure.  It will cover many of the fish you will encounter, inshore and offshore.

The tip links are full of useful information to help you catch more fish.  We will have links to some of the best marinas, tackle suppliers, charter boats, and fishing guides in the area.  We have quick links to local weather.  The Seafood Recipe forum will have some great ideas for your catch.

Our sponsors thank you for visiting and wish you a safe and productive fishing adventure!   Please visit them by clicking on their banner.  We hope you enjoy the site, good luck and tight-lines!

Lowcountry Fishing Outlook- February 1, 2010

Little River

  • Inshore: Captain Michael Rutenberg reports that some anglers are sight fishing for redfish on the flats in very shallow water. Trout and black drum have moved into the IntraCoastal Waterway, and particularly the trout can be caught trolling grubs.
  • Cherry Grove Pier: Only a few whiting are being caught.

Grand Strand

  • Georgetown Landing Marina reports that inshore fishing is very slow with only an occasional spottail caught. However, most trout appear to have made it through last weekend.

Charleston

  • Spottail Bass: Good. Haddrell's Point reports that redfish are schooled up tight on shallow mud flats at lower tides. Gulp! jerkshad, mud minnows and crab imitation baits will all catch fish if a very slow presentation is used.
  • Sheepshead: Good. Haddrell's Point reports that sheepshead are still available inshore, but anglers should look a bit deeper. Fiddle crabs, oysters, live shrimp or clam strips fished vertically against any heavy structure near deep water will work.
  • Trout: Slow to fair. Haddrell's Point reports that they are concerned about water temperatures but it appears that most trout have made it through last weekend.

Beaufort

  • Spottail Bass: Fair. Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort reports that only a few people are going out after them in the cold, but fish are schooled up very tightly and are easily visible in the clear water – getting them to bite is another matter. The bite is better on low tide, and an afternoon low in the "heat" of the day makes both fish and fishermen more energetic. On the fly the top pattern is Dupre Spoon flies. Further south in Hilton Head Captain Dan "Fishin' Coach" Utley reports that fish have gone back to eating after the recent cold weather blast. While the bite remains tough on low tide the incoming tide has been much better over oyster beds and mud flats.
  • Trout: Bay Street Outfitters reports most trout appear to have made it through last weekend, although dolphins may have caught a substantial number of stunned fish.

Tybee Island

  • Captain C.T. at Tybee Island Bait and Tackle says the water temperature has finally started to rise from our cold snap a few weeks ago. As of this morning it was 52 degrees in Lazaretto Creek. With the rise comes a return to the normal January fishing pattern. Reports from this past week and weekend were promising with some trout being caught in deeper holes at the end of outgoing tides, redfish are being caught with some regularity on the flats of Ossabaw and in and along the grass on local creeks and rivers. The sheepshead bite is improving daily also with the rising water temperature.
